What to Expect While Volunteering Abroad

Volunteering abroad is a great way to explore the world around you while also making a positive impact on local communities, allowing you to immerse yourself with the local people and cultures, learn a new language, and gain a real understanding of the issues at hand. But first, there are many things to consider before jumping on an airplane.

Be Flexible

Understand that your volunteering experience will be very different than your summer backpacking through Europe. There are parts of the developing world that lack access to clean water and electricity. They may eat different food and sleep in different conditions. And for those who grew up post-Google, while not being connected to the internet or Wi-Fi may seem terrifying, remember there are people doing it every day who are surviving. Researching your destination beforehand will help you avoid culture shock and pack correctly.

Choose a Cause You Love, No Matter the Distance

We all have a cause that speaks to us, whether it is teaching English to children in Panama or strengthening coffee cooperatives in Haiti. Choose one near and dear to your heart. Volunteering in a field you are passionate about will help keep you motivated to pursue that passion.

Be Fearless

It takes time to acclimate to your surroundings and feel immersed in a culture. Don’t stress too much about feeling out of place. People are friendlier than you think. Talk to your community, ask questions, try new food, try a local activity outside of your comfort zone, and soak in your experience. Make an effort to learn the language. Try speaking it with your host family or others in the community no matter how embarrassed you are. Most importantly, learn how to say, “thank you.” And to really get a head start, consider learning the basics of the language before your trip– that way you’re not too lost.

Don’t be Intimidated by the Challenges

Throughout your volunteering experience, there will be moments of frustration and challenges that will test you mentally. Embrace them. These moments will push you past your limits, teaching you about yourself and opening your mind to new ways of thinking.
